Day 1 & 2
International flights from New Zealand to Paris.

Day 3 Paris
Morning excursion to Montmartre with a visit to Sacre Coeur.

Afternoon visit to Les Invalides Museum. The Museum is one of the biggest museums of military art and history in the world. It contains some of the world’s most prestigious collections, including old weapons and armour, small artillery models and a unique set of 19th-century items relating to Napoleon I and the marshals of the Empire in particular.

Day 4 Paris
Guided visit to Versailles. Versailles Palace is the largest Palace in Europe built by King Louis XIV. Today Versailles is a unique place to witness what was the opulence and abundance of luxury in which the Kings of France used to live.

Day 5 Paris
Morning visit to the Louvre.

Afternoon sightseeing tour of Paris, followed by a 1-hour boat trip on the River Seine. Cruise up the majestic Seine and discover the sights of Paris from a new perspective.

Day 6 Camembert
Morning transfer to Camembert to visit a local producer. Transfer to Bayeux to visit the tapestry and view the main sights of the city. Capital of the Bessin area, Bayeux has deep historic roots stretching back to Roman times, although what you see only goes back as far William the Conqueror’s reign – the duke, also King of England by the time, was even present at the cathedral’s consecration in 1077.

Day 7 Mont St Michel
Morning transfer to Mont St Michel where you will enjoy a city tour. Perched on a rocky islet in the midst of vast sandbanks exposed to powerful tides between Normandy and Brittany stand the ‘Wonder of the West’, a Gothic-style Benedictine abbey dedicated to the archangel St Michael, and the village that grew up in the shadow of its great walls. Built between the 11th and 16th centuries, the abbey is a technical and artistic tour de force, having had to adapt to the problems posed by this unique natural site.

Day 8 Normandy
Today will be spent visiting the D Day beaches.

The D-Day landings were the largest seaborne invasion in history.

Day 9 Amiens
Morning transfer to Amiens. You will have free time on arrival.

Day 10 Amiens
Full-day tour of the battlefields. You will start with Ovillers-la-Boisselle, including a visit to the crater. The Lochnagar mine was a mine dug by the Tunnelling Companies of the Royal Engineers in the front line. The crater has been preserved as a memorial.

Then continue to Authuille where you will visit the Thiepval Memorial.

Your final stop will be at Somme where you will visit the Somme Museum. The Somme 1916 Museum occupies what was originally the crypt beneath the basilica, used as aircraft shelters in World War II. Alcoves show scenes of trench life during World War I.

Day 11 Le Quesnoy
Morning transfer to Le Quesnoy for a guided tour. A week before the end of World War I in November 1918, the New Zealand Division captured the French town of Le Quesnoy. It was the New Zealanders’ last major action in the war. To this day, the town of Le Quesnoy continues to mark the important role that New Zealand played in its history.

Day 12 Lille
Morning transfer to Beaumont-Hamel to visit the Newfoundland Memorial Park. This is a memorial site dedicated to the commemoration of Dominion of Newfoundland forces members killed during World War I. Continue on to Longueval where you will visit the Caterpillar Cemetery.

Afternoon transfer to Lille to visit the Carriere Wellington memorial.

Day 13 Ypres
Full-day tour of Ypres. Visit the Passchendaele Museum, Tyne Cot Cemetery, and the Polygon Wood NZ Memorial before walking to the Menin Gate Ceremony.

The Passchendaele Museum tells the story of the war in the Ypres Salient with special emphasis on the Battle of Passchendaele 1917, one of the bloodiest battles of the First World War.

The Polygon Wood Sector was part of the Ypres Salient and the scene of heavy fighting for most of the war. It was originally held by the Allied forces but lost to the Germans in 1915.

Day 14 Brussels - New Zealand
Today you will be transferred to Brussels for your return journey.
